Planning for Jan Term 180 in Ireland

A moment can be the great turning point of a life. For Mary Harris Jones, it was the loss of her husband and four children to yellow fever and later the loss of her home, shop, and possessions in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. With nothing left to lose, she joined a labor movement, eventually organizing strikes across the United States. You might know her words:
“I am not afraid of the pen, or the scaffold, or the sword. I will tell the truth wherever I please. “
or
“Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.”
You might also know her by the name, Mother Jones. Though her movement building work was in the United States, she was born in Cork City, County Cork, Ireland. She was born a rebel in the “Rebel City”.
What can we as American artists, musicians, dancers, and writers learn from Cork, the “Rebel City”? What can we learn about arts as resistance?
In this travel course, you, too, will cultivate fearless truth-telling within the vibrant arts community of Cork City in Ireland. There is a longtime municipal partnership and transatlantic connections between the San Francisco Bay Area and Cork, one supported by the embassies of the United States and Ireland. You will be an important part of the Sister Cities Program.
I'm thrilled to say that in about 10 days, my Jan Term class will be on it's way to Ireland. I'm taking 16 student visual artists, dancers, musicians, vocalists, a hip hop artist, writers and poets. At this point, I have planned theater workshops with two separate organizations, set up a collaborative artist residency at The Guest House, found spaces for students to be physically active and for dancers to rehearse, connected with the university to develop relationships with college students in the arts ... it's going to be a dynamic course. I'm just hoping it meets or exceeds the expectations of the students and the arts community in Cork.
This is a huge endeavor, one that continues a Sister City exchange that's been healthily going on for the last 3 year now. I've been hectically planning for months now, but most especially in the last few weeks when things could more easily come together. Most folks don't plan a year out for a class and are far more responsive when they have a handle on their own plans. There's always a risk, though, in cementing plans a week before Jan Term that the folks I need will just not be available.
