Day 7: Tracking Workload (Im)balance

Woke up and had breakfast with my husband; walked the dog; attempted to keep her from jumping on every passerby; sent emails to my Jan Term group about passports and health center meetings; emailed my former chair (she's on sabbatical and couldn't continue) about the R&T process and its progress; emailed a student I observed today; worked on my agendas for Literacy; prepped my materials (beads, yarn, printer, resources, paper, etc) for the Radical Publishing workshop; connected with colleague about updating Literacy students on an upcoming event; corresponded with another colleague about her R&T future chair; emailed the school in Kenya about Jan Term dates; emailed the Safari company about those dates; emailed an event organizer for an upcoming reading; emailed with a colleague at another university that is using my first book in their class (making video responses to questions this coming weekend); set up a house cleaning service (because I'm brilliant and messy and so is my husband and my dog is definitely messy, though we like to think she's brilliant, too); walked the dog; observed a student at Berkeley High School; was reminded how much I miss teaching middle and high school students sometimes; had a very late lunch; met with a student about her capstone on Zoom; filed the paperwork for that meeting and the meetings with another masters capstone student; started dinner (pasta with a homemade pesto and roasted squash); read Making Handmade Books to choose bindings for the Radical Publishing workshop; made one sample book; packed supplies for the Radical Publishing workshop; watched Luke Cage while working; connected with a student to set up our conference tomorrow; connected with multiple friends about them coming to the Bay during Litquake week; talked with my partner about upcoming travel and house guests (so many people coming, which is pretty exciting); talked with my partner about new opportunities; commented on the number of fire trucks raging through Berkeley in the last few days

Tomorrow, here's what I can see happening:  breakfast; short walk with the dog; dress; write up my observation notes for my student; meet with the second masters capstone student on her project; drive onto campus; print out the agendas for my search committee meeting; search committee meeting; pick up my Literacy copies; go over the agenda two more times; make sure that I have all the copies; get psyched up for class by listening to the new Solange album (I've only heard one song at this point); if I have a moment, email the workshop ideas, which I think might be about radical publishing, if I can figure out a way to get materials over with me; teach literacy; come home.

[Also, looking at the list of things I do each day, no wonder I haven't gotten to the Community Group selections, reading a new novel that's been on my desk for a few days, finishing a fantastic book on Post Traumatic Slave Disorder that Cliff recommended, or analyzed a data set that I've been aching to do for months (but especially the last few days since I just decided to get transcripts done).]

Create the video responses using Swivl; create and email Paul a workshop idea for the reading I'm doing in Ireland; craft my agenda for that trip; email my friend on sabbatical; review my proposed teaching schedule for the next few years (because I planned something like 5 years in advance, because we want to have kids and there is no consistent maternity policy practice); send the search committee more articles on diversity hiring; reach out to R&T potential letter writers; email the provost about a certificate program and funding for a program that would allow people to report out on the work in a community reading and action group on campus; craft the Community Group reading list; work on reviewing Lauren's, Siavash's, and La'Vonnda's different manuscripts; set up a time to meet with a colleague who will be teaching the Foundations class this January under our new proposed schedule; submit my professional development proposal to David this year; submit all of my receipts for the PD I've already done and is upcoming (I'm owed around $2000 from the conferences this summer for university support, because I haven't had a moment to fill out paperwork in weeks); consider submitting a course proposal to the MAIT (though doubtful since I have a lot of other things I'm taking on); create a “challenge” protocol for students in the SSTE program; craft the part-time faculty syllabus and guidelines on our program; confirm Hedgebrook participation with Joanne; respond to Mami’s letter; submit poems; go back to my submissions list; look for fellowships; work on my Better Together speech from the summer to send out; work on processing my research on Kenyan teachers; do a P&W pitch on the work of Tara Betts;  Send proposals to three universities for readings and lectures in Spring and Fall of 2017; start working on 10th anniversary anthology for Acentos Review; apply for a Fulbright; look into Semester at Sea professorship; apply for book fairs; try to set up Faculty of Color social events again
